Bicycles/Public Transport

Bicycles and public transportCycling is an essential part of Dutch culture. So make sure you join in!

If you want to ‘go Dutch’ and cycle around the city, you should consider buying a second-hand bicycle at one of the many bicycle repair shops in Amsterdam. There is one located in the cellar of VU University Amsterdam’s main building. It’s called Klavertje Vier and it sells second-hand bicycles for approximately €125.

Starting June 3rd 2010, paper tickets (strippenkaarten) are no longer sold or valid on trams, buses and metro. Since that date, the ov-chipkaart is in use, an electronic card which can be purchased at the ticket counter of the main railway and metro stations in Amsterdam.
