Visa / Residence permit
Here you can find information about your visa and residence permit (if applicable).Requirements for obtaining a residence permit
After arriving in the Netherlands, anyone who is not an EU/EEA resident and wishes to stay in the Netherlands for more than three months must apply for a residence permit. VU University Amsterdam will help you with the application and send in your forms after the application is complete.
The rules are different depending on your situation.
Note: the residence permit application is crucial for registration at the municipality (GBA) and registration at VU University Amsterdam.
Tuberculosis test
Students from certain counties will need to take a tuberculosis test in order to obtain a residence permit.
Replacement of lost or stolen residence permit card
If your residence permit card is lost or stolen, you must apply to the IND directly for a replacement. At present, the cost of doing so is €250.
Please note that you must report the loss or theft to the police, and that you must apply for a new pass.
Satisfactory Academic Progress (non-EU/EEA students)
Students who require a residence permit must maintain satisfactory academic progress while studying at VU University Amsterdam. If this is not the case, your residence permit may be terminated.
You are required to obtain a minimum of 30 ECTS points per year (from a normal study load of 60 ECTS points).
This will be evaluated at the end of the academic year. However, if you are experiencing personal or other problems, we strongly suggest that you seek help as early as possible.
Refund of living expenses
If you have transferred an amount to cover your costs of living to us (so as to obtain a visa), it will be refunded to you once you are in the Netherlands and have opened a Dutch bank account. To request a refund, please fill in and return this form.
