Tuition fees 2012/2013 (with reservation)

Tuition fees for nationals of EEA countries for the 2012-2013 academic year will amount to €1,771 for a full-time study programme, part-time study programme or dual study programme, including both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. An exception to this is the Research Master’s programme in Social Psychology, for which the fees are €5,000.

For students from non-EEA countries, the fees will remain at the same level as the 2012-2013 academic year - please see Tuition fees for non-EEA students. For information about fees for the part-time programmes in Accounting and Control, Marketing and Business Administration, please contact the faculty. The fees for extraneus ('exams-only' students) are €9,000.

Nationals of non-EEA countries are liable for the same fees as nationals of EEA countries if their spouse or registered partner is a national of an EEA country and is legally resident in the Netherlands. In these cases, students are required to send proof of this to the student administration.

Students who have already been awarded a degree in the Netherlands (except for students who are going to take a degree for the first time in the field of health care or a teaching qualification) will pay the institutional rate in 2012-2013. This does not apply if the degree was awarded before 1991.
The following fees are applicable:

Bachelor’s programmes

€9,000  Faculties of Arts, Theology, Philosophy, Law, Economics and Business Administration, Social Sciences and Psychology and Education
€11,000 Faculties of Earth and Life Sciences, Sciences, and Human Movement Sciences
€15,000Medicine
€25,000Dentistry

Master's programmes

€12,000 for all Master’s programmes, except:

Faculties of Arts, Theology, and Philosophy                                                                                                                                  €10,500
Medicine€15,000
Dentistry€25,000
MPhil in Economics (Tinbergen)€9,200

If you are only interested in a certain module or modules within a particular programme, you can ask the faculty if it is possible to complete that/those on the basis of contract education. The fees for this have not yet been finalized, but will probably start at €100-200 per study credit.

The higher institutional rate does not apply to students who are taking a second degree alongside their first. If you are registered for two Bachelor’s programmes or two Master’s programmes and you have only completed one of them, you are still entitled to complete the second at an institutional rate that is the same as the legal rate, provided that you also complete the second study programme before September 2013.

Measures for students who fall behind with their studies ('langstudeerders regeling')
In july 2011 the proposed measures for students who fall behind with their studies were effected bij the government.
From 1 September 2012 these measures will be implemented and will apply to all students who are liable for the legal rate (and thus not only those who begin their study programme in the year in which the law will be effected).
It means that:

  • students may fall behind by one year in a Bachelor’s programme while still paying the legal rate (in other words, they can take four years to complete the programme); from the fifth year onwards, they will be required to pay €3,063 extra in tuition fees;
  • students may fall behind by one year in a Master’s programme while still paying the legal rate; students doing a one-year Master’s programme may therefore take two years to complete it. Students who are entitled to an extra year of student finance (e.g. handicapped students) are also entitled to an extra year at the legal rate.

Premaster before 1 September 2011
Premasterstudents who started before 1 September 2011 with a Premaster, were registered for that period as a masterstudent. This was administrative thus regulated by different institutions, in consultation with the Ministry of Education (Ministerie van OCW). At the time this was decided, there was no effect for students formally. This means, unfortunately, that for those students the Premasterperiod also counts for the number of registration years that the student can study in de Master ‘s level at the legal rate. At this moment there is consultation hereabout with OC&W.
Therefore, during the Premaster’ year  the ‘lead-out’ year has already been consumed.
The Executive Board shall deliberate on appropriate measures for students who started in 2010 with the Premaster and who have moved on to a 1-years’ Master and for students who started in 2009 with a Premaster and have moved on to a 2-years’ Master.
They aim at a solution in which students will be compensated up to 1 year for the 'langstudeerders' fine:
- for students who started in 2010 with a premaster and moved on to a 1-year master in 2011 and who have not finished this master in September 2012
- for students who started in 2009 with a premaster and moved on to a 2-year master in 2010 and who have not finished this master in September 2012.
On the exact interpretation is still consultation with the university student council.
Information hereabout appears in the spring of 2012 on this webpage.

Premasters 2011-2012
Premasterstudents who enrolled in 2011-2012, were registered for this ‘schakel’period as a bachelorstudent. These students pay for this period the institutional fee, equal to the legal fee, because they already have obtained a bachelor. The Premaster ‘schakel’ year does not count for the ‘langstudeerdersregeling’.
If you do not already have earned a Master’s degree, you can start after completing the Premaster with a Master study at the legal rate of tuition fees; you still have the nominal duration + 1 year to obtain the Master degree at the legal rate.

Premasters from September 2012
Based on an agreement between the VSNU and the Ministry, students can follow a trajectory of more than 30 ects at a contract tariff equal to the legal tuition fees (for 2012-2013 this is € 1,771.-).
If more than 30 ects are required to bridge the difference  between your qualifications and the eligibility criteria for the Master, then for these additional modules rates of € 100.- and € 150.- per etc will be charged.
