Erasmus Mundus degree programmes
VU University offers several Erasmus Mundus joint programmes with international partner universities in different countries.
Erasmus Mundus is a cooperation and mobility programme in the field of higher education for:
- the enhancement of quality in European higher education;
- the promotion of the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world;
- the promotion of intercultural understanding through cooperation with third countries as well as for the development of third countries in the field of higher education.
Erasmus Mundus provides a response to the challenges of globalization faced by European higher education today, in particular the need to adapt education systems to the demands of the knowledge society, to enhance the attractiveness and visibility of European higher education worldwide and to stimulate the process of convergence of degree structures across Europe.

ENC Network
Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate programme European Neuroscience Campus network
The EMJD-consortium ENC Network has developed a balanced 3 year joint PhD curriculum, comprising both advanced neuroscience specialization courses, as well as higher level training in academic skills (writing scientific papers and grant proposals, presentation techniques for various audiences, language courses, e.g.). The curriculum contains newly developed ENC-Network courses, Advanced Methods workshops, Annual meetings and so on. It is embedded in the international oriented local PhD programmes of the ENC Institutes.
Partners:
- Centre for Neuroscience and cell Biology, Portugal
- Neuroscience Center Zurich, Switzerland
- European Neuroscience Institute Gottingen, Germany
- Bordeaux Institute of neuroscience, France

NEURASMUS
A European Master of Neuroscience: Advanced Courses and Research Training
The Erasmus Mundus Master Course (EMMC) Neurasmus is part of the European Neuroscience Campus Network (ENC Network).
Neurasmus is a 2 year (120 ECT) full-time Neuroscience study programme taught in English, with a strong emphasis on training in cutting-edge techniques in all major topics of brain research, from molecules to cognition. Its main objective is to foster Neuroscience education and train new brain scientists, by offering a unique interdisciplinary and integrated approach of normal brain function and of brain diseases. Students become qualified to formulate appropriate questions and propose and apply effective investigations to complex Neuroscience issues. They also learn to work in team effort as well as autonomously, to interpret and communicate results effectively and to find applications in order to reach to clinical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological targets.
Neurasmus is offered by:
- Université Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2 in association with Université Bordeaux 1, France
- VU University Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal
- Universitätsmedizin Göttingen, Germany
- Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität und Humboldt- Universität zu Berlin, Germany
- Université Laval, Québec, Canada

MOVE-AGE - Prevention of mobility loss with ageing
The Joint Doctorate Program ‘MOVE-AGE’ (EMJD), is funded by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus Mundus program. In the MOVE-AGE program approximately 50 PhD students will receive a fellowship to study how mobility can be maintained during ageing. Loss of mobility with ageing is a vast and rapidly growing social and economic problem worldwide. Within MOVE-AGE we will perform translational research to generate knowledge and to train a new generation of scientists to address this problem.
Each fellow will be supervised by top-level researchers from at least two of the three participating institutes:
- MOVE of VU University Amsterdam
- Institute for Biomedical Research into Human Movement and Health of Manchester Metropolitan University
- Doctoral School Exercise and Physical Activity in Health and Disease K.U. Leuven
TROPED
European Master in International Health
The European Master of Science Programme in International Health is part of tropEd, a network of 33 European and 7 non-European institutions for higher education. In existence since 1996, tropEd collaborates closely with institutions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas in providing postgraduate education and training opportunities.
The European Master of Science Programme in International Health is a one year, full-time study programme taught in English except in Mexico (in Spanish). The main objective of the programme is to raise awareness of current global health concerns. Students become qualified to identify and critically analyse key factors shaping the health and well-being of populations in low- and middle-income countries and to formulate effective and appropriate responses to complex health-related issues.
The tropEd EMMC is offered by 7 European Institutions, and 3 Third Country Institutions, each contributing with specific expertise in a particular area of International Health:
- Kobenhavns Universitet, Denmark
- Université Victor Segalen Bordeaux2, France
- Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin und Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany
- Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública, Mexico
- VU University / Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Universitetet i Bergen, Norway
- University of Cape Town, South Africa
- Khon Kaen University, Thailand
- University College London, United Kingdom
- Queen Margaret University, United Kingdom

Atosim
Atosim 2.0 (EMMC) is a master in Atomic Scale Modelling of Physical, Chemical and Biomolecular Systems.
AtoSim is a Physics or Chemistry Masters degree providing a high-level qualification in the rapidly expanding field of computer modeling in physical, chemical and bio-molecular sciences and covering a wide range of techniques: from quantum mechanical atomistic descriptions to coarse-grained mesoscopic models. Particular fields of application include condensed matter and statistical physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science and theoretical bio-molecular science.
The second edition of Atosim, Atosim2.0 (from 2011/12-2015/16) is a highly integrated TWO-year Erasmus Mundus master jointly operated by:
- University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands
- Ecole normale supérieure in Lyon, France
- University la Sapienza in Rome, Italy
