VU mathematician receives grant to investigate patterns

What do fingerprints, zebra stripes, turbulence, cardiac arrhythmias and the red spots of chickenpox have in common?

How these physical and biological patterns emerge is well understood, but scientists still cannot predict how they subsequently develop in the longer term. To investigate this, Jan Bouwe van den Berg receives a grant of € 1.5 million from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). His research combines mathematical techniques with computer simulations in order to understand such pattern formation and complex dynamics mathematically.
