Artificial Intelligence
Why Artificial Intelligence?
As an AI Master’s student, you learn how to conduct independent research into the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). You explore knowledge acquisition and modelling, multi-agent systems and techniques to make your searches more efficient and effective. And because intelligence is about more than just logical thought, you draw upon knowledge from across the academic spectrum. From philosophy, logic and psychology, to information science, linguistic analysis and mathematics.
Your profile, your background
Are you interested in technology and in human behaviour? Do you love working with the very latest information and communications technology? And do you want to take a wide-ranging programme with a select group of fellow students? If all these questions can be answered with ‘yes’, then the Master’s in Artificial Intelligence at VU University Amsterdam is the programme for you.
"We study how persons function in their daily life. In particular when they reach states that make their functioning less satisfactory. This may be the results of psychological and/or biomedical causes. Based on knowledge about these processes, we investigate how human-aware environments can be designed. Such environments can take into account a person's characteristics and states and provide support in a sensitive manner, using personal devices such as mobile phones or PDA's. We can apply this in different contexts; persons suffering from depressions or chronical diseases, to elderly persons or to persons in demanding circumstances (such as air traffic controllers)."

Current research topics
Structuring information
How can you bring structure to the information on the internet? Is it possible to make the internet smarter and more personal?
What turns information into knowledge?
Introducing structure, so that the computer can do something with it. But how do you generate the right knowledge? And how do you make sure the computer knows what to do with the information presented?
Learning from data
There are millions of hard disks full of information reflecting our world. What can you learn about the real world from that mass of digital information?
Supporting humans in an intelligent manner with awareness of the human’s state
How can you make intelligent support systems (or agents) that are aware of the current functioning of the human and can give dedicated support based upon this state of the human.
