| “Last summer I did whale research in the Azores. During the sea observations I concentrated on making photo ID’s, so that I could identify individual animals again from land. One of the best parts of a work placement like this is that you are completely on your own. It’s just you and your fellow researchers. You get to know new people, you find out about other cultures and you pick up another language. And, of course, it was a tremendous research experience. I would really encourage other students to do research abroad.”

| “I started the Bachelor’s programme in Biology with the expectation that I would go into research. However, if your range of interests is as broad as mine, the idea of specialization is a bit daunting. So I was delighted with the broad-based programme at VU University Amsterdam. I am currently in the Science Communication profile. What I like about this option is, it teaches you to think critically, to apply new skills and get your message across to your peers and society.”
