Living Reformed Theology (specialization of Theology & Religious Studies)

Reformed Theology: alive and kicking

The Master’s specialization in Living Reformed Theology at VU University Amsterdam enables you to deepen your understanding of the Christian faith. It focuses on systematic and hermeneutical theology from a Reformed perspective and offers a comprehensive and systematic theological insight into the key aspects of the Christian faith. You will be challenged to translate these insights into new contexts and areas of application. The broad international character of the programme encourages you to place your own understanding of the faith in a wider context.

Living Reformed Theology is a specialization within the Master’s programme in Theology & Religious Studies. The lectures are always combined with the opportunity to discuss the issues at hand. Guest lecturers from other universities may also be invited to come and talk about a specific subject or discipline.

The Master's has a strong focus on research. You will receive training in how to ask the right questions with regard to motivation, scholarly importance, attainable goals, relevant methodology and the current state of research on the topic. This will help you formulate an acceptable research proposal, which you will then develop with the expert guidance of an individual supervisor. So the Master’s provides an outstanding basis for writing a thesis, perhaps even with a view to pursuing your studies at PhD level.

Contextualization
How our faith is practised in our current environment and culture is an important part of contextual theology. Our Christian faith is not practised in a vacuum. Each person must therefore learn how to analyse the world around them. One of the current studies being done by a student is an example of this: she has chosen the topic “How can the Christologies of Henk Berkhof and Colin Gunton be applied in the context of the proclamation of the Gospel in Amsterdam in the early 21st century?” She is researching valuable information that can be of use in her field. This is the benefit of contextual theology.
