Visa / Residence Permit

Visa requirements

VU University Amsterdam will apply on your behalf for your visa and/or residence permit after you have been (conditionally) admitted and have accepted our admission offer for a Bachelor, Master, or Exchange programme.

The deadlines for this process are 1 June (1st semester) and 1 December (2nd semester).

Do I need a visa/residence permit?

Students from non-EU/EEA and Visa required countries who will stay for a period longer than 3 months are required to obtain a permit for temporary stay (MVV - Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) in order to enter the Netherlands.

Please note the following points:

  • No visa can be obtained for studies for which places are assigned by lottery.
  • In addition, it is not possible to obtain a student visa for a prepatory year if you have any deficiencies other than the Dutch language.
  • Before starting the MVV visa procedure, payment of a handling fee of € 650 is required.

Please note that the rules here apply for those coming to the Netherlands for study (full time or exchange). For questions regarding visa requirements for PhD's and guests, please contact Immigration.dsz@vu.nl.

If you are staying in the Netherlands for more than 3 months, the following rules apply:
