Obtaining a PhD at VU University Amsterdam

At the start of the PhD, you and your supervisor decide on, among other things, your research plan, the programmes you will be taking, and your supervision. The agreements are set down in the training and guidance plan, which is amended as necessary from year to year.

The provisions in the Collective Labour Agreement regarding PhD students are expanded upon in the PhD student regulations, although they are currently being reviewed.

Individual modules form part of the PhD programmes:

• Many of these modules are given within Graduate Schools.
• Additionally, there is a wide range of modules within research schools.
• A course in how to successfully obtain a PhD and personal effectiveness is arranged for all first-year PhD students, available in Dutch and English.
• PhD students also teach seminars and lectures, and they supervise laboratory courses, work placements and dissertations.

The Doctorate Regulations cover all matters relating to obtaining a doctorate in detail.
