Post-PhD

As the PhD research enters its final phase, the question, ‘what am I going to do next?’ inevitably becomes more and more pressing. ‘Do I want and am I able to continue my career as a researcher? Or do I leave the academic world? How would I go about making the step to the private or public sector?’ In order to assist young researchers in these choices, VU University Amsterdam offers its PhD students the career orientation for PhD students.

For those PhD students seeking to continue their careers as researchers, various options exist. For example, there is a special guidance programme for motivated and talented PhD students seeking to apply for a Veni grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Many researchers also use the NWO Rubicon in order to gain experience at leading research institutes abroad. For those researchers wishing to improve their chances of submitting a successful research proposal, the Career and Development Centre organizes a course in writing research proposals.
