Bioinformatics: Specialization in Systems Biology

Why Systems Biology?

Systems Biology has been recognized as a powerful approach to solve biological questions at various levels and to come to quantitative descriptions of biological behaviour, structure and evolution. Also in medical sciences, drug design and biotechnology, systems biology is seen as an avenue to increase our understanding and to improve on applications with regard to production, stability, efficiency and control.

Current research topics
Both applied and fundamental research topics emanated from the field of Systems Biology. They concern the more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of diseases (personalized medicine), improvement of biotechnological production, as well as large scale modeling and measurement of metabolism of individual organisms and biological communities, and understanding regulation strategies and other properties of organisms and communities from a perspective of evolutionary optimization.

Accreditation and degree
Systems Biology is a specialization of the Master's programme in Bioinformatics. This Master’s programmes have been legally accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a legally accredited Master's degree in Bioinformatics and the title of Master of Science (MSc).
