Christian Studies of Science and Society
What is ‘Christian Studies’ all about?
In the Master’s in Christian Studies of Science and Society, you will take a creative approach to questions concerning the underlying ideas of truth and reality, the underlying concept of the human being and the place of ethics. You will do this both more theoretical and more practical-ethical, from a Christian perspective. Examples of these quesions are the following:
- Can everything be expressed in terms of costs and benefits?
- Is human behaviour primarily a result of processes in the brain?
- Can people be moulded by technology?
- Is society nothing more than a power game?
- Is there a place for ethics within my own field of work and study?
You will analyze the assumptions underlying mainstream approaches in your own field and will do so within the broad framework of modern cultural developments in the northern and southern hemispheres. You will also formulate productive adjustments and alternatives from a Christian perspective. All this will be undertaken at an academic level.
Embark on a critical exploration of modern culture, politics and society, rekindle ethical inspiration in your own field, dare to question the purpose of your discipline!
Christian tradition
In this program the Christian tradition functions as a critical starting point for these debates. At VU University Amsterdam there is a long-standing tradition of Christian philosophical thinking and debate, which concentrates on a critical analysis of various contemporary issues in science, society and culture.
The significance of religion in general and its impact on all walks of life are the focus of much attention and controversy at present. Unfortunately much of this attention centres on fundamentalism, religious violence and religious bigotry. But religion very often has a creative and positive influence on societies. Consider for example the truth and reconciliation process in South Africa and the commitment to human rights shown by churches throughout the world.
Christianity does not provide clear-cut answers, but can inspire people to explore new avenues in relation to problems like the ones mentioned. That is what you will do as a student on this programme.
