Christian Studies of Science and Society (track of Philosophy (1 year))

Specializations

Still within the first semester, your studies will become more specialized. You can choose from three areas:

Politics and Society
Wherever you look, neo-liberalism seems to rule the roost. The sole emphasis appears to be on economic globalization. This makes it easier for people to lose sight of the meaning of morality and law, justice and shalom. In this specialization, we examine what can happen when these notions are given pride of place.

Technology, Science and Responsibility
People often use modern scientific and technological developments to defend a fixed and blinkered view of humanity. A human being can be reduced to his or her DNA, people can be seen as information systems just like machines or human behaviour can be viewed as the expression of our ‘selfish’ genes continually trying to gain an evolutionary advantage. In this specialization, we ask whether the empirical and technological sciences might also allow scope for a much richer view of humanity.

Ethics, Healthcare, Social Work
In the healthcare sector and social work, there is an increasing tendency to judge people’s performance in terms of results (often financial) and ‘care minutes’. Many professionals no longer see their inspiration reflected in such an environment. In this specialization, we go in search of core values that can provide new inspiration in the real world of the caring professions. You will conclude your first six months by producing an individual project.
