Information Sciences

Student experiences

Graduate Information SciencesThe application of computer science and ICT in a business context is a fascinating field that involves topics such as business intelligence, knowledge management and software architecture. The Master's programme in Information Sciences connects these concepts and embeds them into a scientific context. During the Master’s project that I conducted at ING Wholesale Banking, the interconnectedness of these  concepts became even more clear. My thesis particularly clarifies the link between corporate strategy, knowledge management and concrete modifications in computer systems in order to facilitate knowledge management.

Through the findings of my Master’s thesis and my experience at ING, I decided to deepen my understanding of corporate strategy. This was the reason for me to start a MSc in Business Administration. IJsbrand den Otter, MSc in Information Sciences, specialization Business Informatics

Foto_Lisa_KroesAt this moment I have completed almost half of my master Information Sciences. Last year I have finished my bachelor Information, Multimedia and Management at the VU and I decided to continue the study program with the corresponding master. My interest in the large amount of data available all over the world and modern technology were main reasons for me to choose for the field of Information Sciences. In my opinion the study provides an interesting combination of courses and quite some flexibility in customizing your own study program that fits best to your interest.

When I started studying, I moved from my hometown to Amsterdam to live here with a couple of friends in a nice apartment. I am having a great time in this city full of opportunities. Next to studying I have always been busy enjoying myself with tons of other creative, sportive and social activities. The more motivated I became during my study, I also got more involved with the VU and its personnel. Since last year I am a student assistant for a couple of courses. In my opinion it is a learning experience and a nice way to earn some extra money.

From February 2011 onwards I will, hopefully, be doing an internship at an interesting company to finish my master with. I want to do my research within a company to gain some practical experience and to have a first look inside an environment that will probably be like the one I will be working at in the future. I like technology, but mainly the practical application of it. For that reason I would like to work on the border between business and IT and give advice to customers how to apply technology efficiently and lucrative.
