The renewal of the Medical Faculty building will start at the end of 2013. The objective of the renovation is to create more attractive facilities (approx. 45,000 m2) for the Medical Research domain and to give a positive boost to the main education process. In the context of the educational agenda, trends in the areas of educational innovation (concentration, digitization, diverse study areas, spaces for meeting and exchanging knowledge) will be reflected in the building. VU Amsterdam will also be investing in the quality of public spaces and technical infrastructure. This improvement in quality will make the building more attractive, more appealing, enhance the organization and contribute to a better use of available space.
The users of the Faculty of Medicine laboratories will move to the new O|2 lab building in 2015. This move will offer more space for new users. After the renovation, the users will be: VU University Medical Center Amsterdam (IOO, the departments currently housed in the OZW building, division VI), Human Movement Sciences (together with the Faculty of Psychology and Education), Inholland University of Applied Sciences, AVAG, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (Athena). The renovation plans are being developed in detail with all current and future users.
The Executive Board has given a green light to the overall programme and investment framework for the continuation plan for the Faculty of Medicine building. This development is in accordance with the principles of VU Amsterdam’s Strategic Plan 2011-2015 and the Campus Vision 2010 framework, implementing an improvement in the quality of the Medical Research facilities and enhancing the attractiveness and appeal of the existing buildings on the VU Amsterdam campus.
The Faculty of Medicine’s programme calls for a continued expansion of the building (to approx. 45,000 m2) until at least 2028. At the end of the current year and the beginning of 2014, work will start on the realization of the initial projects in the building. All projects in the continuation plan will be completed in the second half of 2016.
