Transport and mobility

VU Amsterdam is easily accessible

Over the past several years, we have taken steps to ‘go greener’ when it comes to commuter traffic and transport relating to university business and services. We are currently working on improving facilities for cyclists and users of electric vehicles by creating more bicycle storage spaces, charging stations, lockers, showers, etc.

VU Amsterdam Green Transport Policy

We operate a green transport policy and actively discourages the use of cars. The parking policy is restrictive whereby an employee only receives a parking permit in certain cases; such as disability or a poor public transport connection. Carpoolers are also eligible for a parking permit. Cycling is encouraged. There are bicycle sharing options for VU card holders and the use of your own bicycle for commutes is subsidized. This helps make the campus a pleasant and attractive location.

VU-VUmc Parking Company

In the autumn of 2013, the VU-VUmc Parking Company fitted charging stations for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles at various parking locations. The 25 charging stations, of which 20 are in the P2 car park under the ACTA building, can be accessed by employees and visitors with a universal charging pass. A car park is to be built under the New University Building with room for 600 cars and 1.600 bicycles. Another 25 charging stations for electric vehicles are to be added in the new P3 VU campus car park; this can be easily increased to 120. By moving parking underground, the quality of public space is improved and the campus will feature more green areas.
