Synthetic Organic Chemistry & Catalysis

Research group Eelco Ruijter

The Synthetic Organic Chemistry & Catalysis research group focuses on the development of highly efficient, asymmetric synthesis methodologies and their application in the synthesis of diverse, biologically relevant compounds, with an emphasis on atomic and resource efficiency.

Three main areas of interest can be distinguished:

  • Rational design and development of flexible new cascade and multi-component reactions (MCRs).
  • Use of biocatalysts for the production of enantiopure building blocks for asymmetric synthesis.
  • Development of asymmetric versions of MCRs and related processes using biocatalysis and/or homogeneous catalysis.

The group's efforts in this area have led to the development of several new MCRs and other cascade reactions yielding valuable heterocycles. Another aim is to integrate the group's successes in MCR chemistry and biocatalysis into approaches for the total synthesis of complex natural products.
