The VU PhD Council is looking for new members
Last updated on 23 July 2026

The VU PhD council was established with the goal of representing and advocating for the interests of all VU PhD candidates. It aims to enhance the social and professional interplay among VU PhD candidates during their PhD trajectory while also addressing organizational developments that impact VU PhDs.

As PhD council we focus on improving the quality-of-life PhD candidates enjoy at the VU. We organize social and informative events, work on improving communication between PhD candidates and the VU, have a voice in PhD policy, and cooperate with other PhD organizations.

For the upcoming academic year (2026/2027), we are looking for new general members. See below for a description of the role, compensation details, and information about how to apply for a position.

General members

As a general member, you will be expected to attend and prepare monthly council meetings and discuss issues relevant to VU PhD students. Additionally, you will join and prepare (monthly) activity meetings for one of the events you’ll be working on, as well as choose one non-event project to assist with. This will give you the opportunity to both work within the larger council, and with small, focused groups of motivated PhD candidates.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are a PhD student at the VU with at least one more year to go.
  • You are enthusiastic about contributing to PhD policy and well-being.
  • You are a good coordinator and team player.
  • You are willing and able to spend at least 4 hours per month on your council work.
  • English proficiency required, Dutch is useful but not necessary

What do we offer?

  • General members of VU PhD council (not members of the board) receive a compensation of two credits in their PhD training program.
  • The opportunity to acquire new skills, get policy-related experience, and broaden your network.
  • The opportunity to contribute to positive change for PhD students.

Interested?

  • To apply send a motivation letter and your CV to phdcouncil@vu.nl by 12 September 2026. Please discuss joining the council beforehand with your supervisor. Do not hesitate to contact us in case you have any questions. New members will be introduced  during the October general meeting, although applications will still be assessed on a rolling basis  afterwards.
