Recently, the international QS World University ranking 2020 (Quacquarelli Symonds) has been released. The yearly international ranking of universities is based on six indicators which particularly emphasizes an institution's international quality and reputation. The methodology is compiled using both quantitative data - such as citation impact and staff/student ratio, as well as qualitative data - such as reputation surveys among academics.

QS ranking places Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam 219 in the world compared to the university's previous position of 231 last year. Academic reputation shows to be the strongest indicator of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Universities are evaluated according to the following six indicators: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), citations per faculty (20%), faculty student (20%), international faculty (5%) and international students (5%).

The recent rank covers a positive development of increasing scores regarding a large majority of the six indicators, and is specifically testament to increasing scores in international ratios (staff/student ratios) and academic reputation.
