Nollen studied Public Administration and Change Management and holds a PhD in Business Administration from Tilburg University. He has been working as an executive in the educational field since the end of 2006: until 2012 as a member of the Executive Board of Albeda College, and subsequently as a member of the Executive Board of Inholland University of Applied Sciences. In these roles, he was responsible for Operations, a portfolio including Finance, HRM, Real Estate, Housing and ICT. Prior to his work at Albeda College and Inholland, he was deputy director of Vocational Education and Adult Education at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
“Marcel Nollen will bring a wealth of relevant experience to the table,” said Ron Teerlink, Chair of the Supervisory Board. “He is a highly effective executive with expertise in all facets of the operational side of higher education management, and we are very pleased with his decision to join our Executive Board. In his role here at VU Amsterdam, Nollen will focus on the university’s primary process by combining vision and abstract thinking with process insight and resolve. With his calm, open and reliable personality, he embodies VU Amsterdam’s core values.”
The VU Amsterdam Executive Board is very much looking forward to welcoming Nollen in its midst, and to what is sure to be an inspirational time for all involved. Marcel Nollen himself is also eager to start his tenure at VU Amsterdam: “I look forward to starting this new position, and to contribute to the university’s continued development. VU Amsterdam is an organization capable of profound and far-reaching social impact, for both its students and the professional field. It’s up to Operations to set the framework needed to guide this impact – a significant responsibility to which I am fully committed.”
Marcel Nollen will join VU Amsterdam on 1 October 2019, starting with an extensive introduction to the organization and a thorough handover process. He will formally start as a member of the Executive Board no later than 15 December 2019, when the term of office of the Executive Board’s vice-president, Marjolein Jansen, expires.
The appointment was prepared by a broad application committee representing a cross section of the university. The committee consisted of members of the Supervisory Board, the President of the Executive Board, the Rector Magnificus, representatives of the Works Council, the University Student Council, deans, service directors and business management directors. The Joint Assembly issued a positive recommendation regarding the intended appointment. They previously advised on the profile of the new member of the Executive Board.
