VU Amsterdam in top 150 Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2020

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is among the top 150 universities in the World university ranking of Times Higher Education: this ranking places VU Amsterdam 138 compared to the university’s previous position of 166.

For the fourth year in a row, the University of Oxford leads the rankings in first place. Regarding the countries that are represented in the top 200, the United States ranks first (e.g. 60 institutions in the top 200), United Kingdom second (e.g. 28 institutions), Germany third (e.g. 23 institutions) and the Netherlands and Australia fourth (e.g. both 11 institutions). Eleven out of thirteen Dutch universities are represented in the top 200 of world universities in the rankings of Times Higher Education.   

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is a global performance ranking that judge research-intensive universities across their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. This world university ranking includes almost 1400 universities. The ranking examines 13 performance indicators grouped into five areas:
·         Teaching: the learning environment, 30%; 
·         Research: volume, income and reputation, 30%; 
·         Citations: research influence, 30%; 
·         International outlook: staff, students and research, 7.5%; and 
·         Industry income: knowledge transfer, 2.5%.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam was ranked in the top 25% for two out of five categories: research and citations. The indicator related to research influence shows to be the strongest indicator regarding VU Amsterdam. The recent rank in the World university rankings of Times Higher Education covers a positive continuation of strong research excellence. A result to be proud of!

Times Higher Education also publishes other global rankings of universities: for example, the Impact ranking as well as the Europe Teaching ranking. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is among the top 30 in both of these ranking in 2019: the university has been ranked =16 in the Impact ranking, and has been ranked =24 in the Europe Teaching ranking.
