At the VU Amsterdam we organize a number of social events and sports activities for PhD candidates and their families.
We are the VU PhD gatherings association. The association is a new and innovative body with the goal of actively engaging all PhD candidates at our university and developing activities by and for the PhD candidates.
These activities are almost ALWAYS organized in the Global Room (Main Building 1A-36).
The main coordinators of the activities are Sauvik Das Gupta (3rd year PhD candidate at the Faculty of Behavioral and Movement Sciences) and Juliana Senna (1st year PhD candidate at the Faculty of Social Sciences).
We organize activities within the four categories:
1. Doctor's Appointments (meetings with a stakeholder on an issue or problem for PhD education including e.g. visa, accommodation, clarification on the requirements for the doctoral defense, job search after the defense). Coordinators: Angelo Romasanta and Marije Blok.
2. PhDiscuss (discussions on topics related to doing a PhD, e.g. stress and anxiety, explaining your research under 90 seconds, promoting your research, alumni events, career events). Coordinators: Yagmur Amanvermez and Sahand Ziabari.
3. PhDrinks (social events making sure PhDs integrate and socialize, e.g. language cafes, pub quizzes). Coordinators: Francis Ostermeijer, Bouke Klein Teeselink and Ikenna Ebuenyi.
4. PhD Family (promoting activities with families such as outdoor activities, city tours, fun crafts, artistic workshops, visits to the petting zoos). Coordinators: Milan Jelisavcic and Wenhui Ding.
You can see all the upcoming gatherings in the online meetup.com calendar. All international PhD candidates are particularly encouraged to sign up for the MeetUp platform.
You can also visit our facebook page.
If you would like to coordinate one of the activities please send an email to email@example.com and Sauvik or Juliana will be happy to help.
Who we are and what we do:
The Forum for Young Scientists (FYS) was founded in 2016 and is a self-support system for PhD candidates and postdocs at the VU. We organize workshops to train soft skills, discuss problems and challenges related to working in academia, and discuss non-scientific themes in a safe and non-hierarchical environment.
Examples of workshops that we organized are: masterclass of presentation skills, writing a good grant proposal, how to become a professor, leadership, from academia to industry, time management.
Our peer group is open for PhD candidates and postdocs from all faculties of the VU. The FYS believes in diversity and we believe that our network can contribute to connect all young scientists, making the VU a more diverse university.

In order to share experiences and discuss important topics in relation to the doctoral process at the VU we regularly organize VU PhD Arenas in the Global Room.
We count on participation of external and internal PhD candidates at VU Amsterdam, as well as relevant stakeholders: directors of graduate schools, Portefeuillehouders Onderzoek, PhD coordinators or research policy advisors to the faculties and graduate schools, HR staff and members of the VU International Staff.
The goal of the Arena is to meliorate the doctoral process and figure out feasible solutions to issues that PhD candidates find most challenging.
The first Arena was held on the 9th of April 2018.
The interests of PhD candidates and postdocs employed by VU Amsterdam are represented by ProVU, which also provides practical tips and information regarding the PhD process: from courses and information on having a thesis printed, to postdoc career advice. The members of ProVU are volunteers from the PhD and postdoc community at VU Amsterdam.
