Training and supervision plan

Doctoral training at VU Amsterdam is organized in graduate schools. After the PhD candidate has been accepted for admission to the doctoral program the PhD candidate and the supervisor devise a training and supervision plan (TSP). The TSP is the core part of every PhD process . It is considered an agreement between the candidate and the supervisor on obligations and duties of both parties and consists of 8 elements of information:

  • type of PhD candidate
  • faculty and graduate school
  • financing instrument/time allocation
  • conference plan/workshop, study visit, summer school plan
  • internships for PhDs
  • supervision plan
  • research plan
  • teaching plan
  • training plan
  • PhD trajectory for 3 or 4 years,
  • evaluation and reporting plan

The PhD candidate must obtain 30EC (European credits) through the training component.

Pre-doctoral programme Indonesia

Three Dutch universities: Leiden, Groningen and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam have joined forces this year to organize a first ever Pre-doctoral programme in Indonesia for future and potential Indonesian PhD candidates at Dutch universities.

This intensive one-week predoctoral programme will take place at Erasmus Training Centre (ETC) in Jakarta, Indonesia in June 2018.

The programme originated out of the of PhD candidates to develop research skills and competences, reinforce academic writing skills in English, and boost presentation skills in order to successfully commence their PhD trajectory. It consists of 4 modules and is well balanced with a module on life in the Netherlands, Dutch culture in general and the Dutch academic system.
