All of Vrije Universiteit’s PhD programmes culminate with the completion of a doctoral dissertation. Following the successful defense of this independent piece of research, Vrije Universiteit students are awarded an internationally recognized doctoral degree, which serves as a first step towards a career in academia, as well as an excellent launching pad into a professional career path requiring skills in advanced research.
Vrije Universiteit doctorates are awarded from one of the university’s ten faculties. Depending on the type of appointment, PhD candidates are either employed by a faculty, or hosted by a faculty under an alternative arrangement. Most PhD programmes are embedded in one of the VU Graduate Schools or a national Research School. VU Graduate Schools are responsible for tailoring the specific elements of their PhD training programmes to the needs of each student.
