BKO-module 2: Teaching
<< Back to course overview for UvA lecturers (Dutch)
This module is for university lecturers who want to improve their teaching skills. The module is one of the core modules within the BKO trajectory for UvA lecturers.
After this module:
- you are able to get your story across to students in an effective way;
- you are able to use tools such as PowerPoint adequately;
- you are aware of your personal strengths and points for improvement regarding teaching.
The module focuses on both lectures and seminars as a form of teaching and consists of two parts. The first part centers around the basic principles of didactic design and presentation. You select a component from your teaching practice that you want to improve. To this you apply the didactic principles discussed. You practice with concrete situations such as managing students’ attention and establishing a connection with your audience. You also practice with giving and receiving feedback.
In the second part of the module each participant gives a mini lesson for the rest of the group. You base this on the above-mentioned component from your own teaching practice. After the mini lesson you receive feedback from the trainer and from the group. Your personal learning questions are a central element in this. At the end of the module together with the other participants you draw up the balance regarding your strengths and points for improvement.
As a preparation for this module you are asked to read the manual Giving an audience-focused presentation by Karin Herrebout. You will receive this manual after registration. Please email questions that you would like to see answered during the sessions to the trainer at least one week before the start of the module. This ensures that these questions can be incorporated into the programme.
