At the end of the course the student
1 Has a general understanding of the historically developed
relationships between space, place and various media (TV, internet,
mobile media) and the way critics have defined these relationships.
2 Has a good understanding of the social-economic contexts in which the
entanglements between media and space & place play a major role and is
able to critically reflect on these.
3 Has a sound theoretical background in a particular thematic field and
the capacity to relate the theory to various cultural practices and to
relevant practical developments in art, media or design.
4 Is able to compare and assess theories from various disciplines and to
relate this broad knowledge to a specialized area of study of his/her
5 Is able to hold an academic discussion individually and in larger
groups; to present a sophisticated argument orally; and to sustain an
academic analysis of a certain length in writing.
6 Has acquired all necessary knowledge to articulate a meaningful
research question, understand and choose relevant theoretical
approaches, select appropriate research methods, and apply this research
design to a relevant body of research material in the area of visual
art, media or design.
Along with the increasing mobility of goods, money, and people and the
interconnectedness of cultures through digital media – known as
globalization – issues of space and place have been back on the agenda
in various disciplines and cultural practices. As if the so-called
placelessness that comes with globalization has called forth a renewed
attention to what gets lost. This does not mean that place and space in
those discussions and practices simply refer back to rootedness, as
opposed to movement. Rather, spatiality often gets redefined in relation
to the physical and virtual mobilities through which it is reshaped.
Interestingly, addressing such new questions about space & place in the
arts, design and media also has far-reaching effects for ourselves since
it enables us to take the objects of our research beyond their presumed
autonomy – beyond the screen or frame so to speak – and into the
lectures and seminars in which students actively engage with the texts

Admission to Humanities Research Master: Critical Studies in Art &
Culture. Students from other tracks in the Humanities Research Master,
and students from comparable research master's programmes elsewhere, may
be admitted individually, depending on their background knowledge.
