Research at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW focuses on life sciences, health sciences, environmental sciences, and earth sciences. FALW offers a range and high-quality BSc and MSc programmes. Worldclass teaching and cutting-edge research activities go hand in hand. The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the eight departments in FALW. It operates with two research clusters: 'Earth and Climate' and 'Geology and Geochemistry' which teach the Earth Sciences and Earth and Economics BSc and MSc programmes. In recent years the Earth and Climate cluster has developed a strong research and teaching profile in the field of climate change. Understanding the causes and consequences of climate change on the environment during the Quaternary, and quantifying their magnitudes and rates, are key topics of our research. Our integrated approach combines expertise in proxy development, landscape- and climate modeling, unraveling landscape evolution, and reconstructions of climate evolution in terrestrial and marine records.
The cluster seeks a highly motivated Assistant Professor – to be recruited on a tenure-track position – to further strengthen the research group in the field of climate modeling with a particular focus on Quaternary climate change. The candidate should be an outstanding Early Career Earth System scientist with proven expertise in modeling the causes and consequences of Quaternary climate change with matching publication record. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. degree in climate modeling and a few years of post-doctoral experience in a related subject. An education in Earth Sciences and experience in carbon processes and related isotopes would be considered as a plus. The successful applicant is expected to develop his ideas in the frame of the Quaternary climate modeling group and in due time to attract external funding for his/her research. He/she will also be expected to supervise undergraduate students and co-supervise PhD students. He/she should also contribute to the teaching and field work within the Bsc and/or Msc programmes of the department.

The Assistant Professor is expected to:
• have a proven interest in the effects of climate change on different timescales (especially Quaternary), ranging from past ice ages to future climate, using climate models as a tool and matching publication and citation records;
• have some knowledge on the functioning of the Earth’s carbon cycle
• have a PhD in Climate modeling or related field
• have a functional international network ;
• be able to successfully work in a multidisciplinary and innovative research field;
• have high-level skills in the acquisition of external funds and a proven capacity to motivate and guide students on the bachelor, master and PhD level;
• have a basic qualification in teaching for Dutch universities ('BKO'), or is willing to follow this course after appointment;
• be fluent in English and to acquire (if appropriate) knowledge of the Dutch language after two years.
Further particulars
We offer a tenure track position for an Assistant Professor initially for the duration of five years. After three years the performance will be evaluated in terms of publication record, acquisition of a prestigious personal grants (e.g. VI or ERC grants) or equivalent industry project funding, and teaching performance. After that a path will be outlined for future promotions and permanent employment. The intention is to offer a permanent contract in the position of Associate Professor after five years.

The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range from a minimum of €3475 up to a maximum of €4757 gross per month based on a fulltime employment (Assistant Professor salary scale 11).
