Membership

Anyone with a VUnetID can use the University Library free of charge. UB membership is also free for students and staff from other Dutch universities and affiliated institutions. For others, there is a paid membership.

Students
If you have a student card, you can have it activated as a library card. First create your personal library account by logging in once in LibSearch with your VUnetID.

On the back of your student card is a 14-digit barcode, starting with 20000. Communicate this number together with your VUnetID by sending an app to 06 - 2569 4822 or an e-mail to ask.ub@vu.nl.

You can also send in a photo of the barcode side of the pass. In that case, also mention your VUnetID in your message.

Employees
VU and VUmc employees can obtain a free library card at the library desk in the VU main building.

Activate your student card as a library card

Sign in to LibSearch and then send us an e-mail or app including your VUnetID + the 14-digit barcode on your student card

External Members
If you want to use the collections of the University Library without having an affiliation with the VU, you can apply for a membership. You will receive a confirmation once we have arranged your membership. From that moment on, you can reserve books via LibSearch. You can collect your library card at our service desk during your first visit. You can also make any payment there.

Membership only provides access to the University Library’s physical collections. E-content can be consulted on campus by logging into the Eduroam network. If you do not have an Eduroam account, you can get a day code at the front desk. This allows you to log in to Eduroam with your own devices.
External borrowers cannot use interlibrary loan services (ILL).

AdamNet: The Amsterdam Library Network
If you would like to use other Amsterdam libraries, it makes sense financially to buy an AdamNet membership. Upon proof of payment you can join 7 libraries in Amsterdam at no extra charge. Membership is available at any branch of the Amsterdam Public Library (OBA) for €75,00 annually. AdamNet members can join the Vrije Universiteits’s Library upon proof of payment at no extra charge.

Rates
The University Library offers various discounts, including for alumni. If you want to consult the collection for a short period, you can also choose a short-term subscription.
