Discount: If you have previously taken a (postgraduate) course at VU Amsterdam or are a VU employee, you are eligible for a €100 discount on this course. You can tick this on the registration form.
Duration: 7 meetings on Wednesdays from 13.30 to 19.30.
Time commitment: participation in training days, preparation of literature approximately 4 hours per meeting, research and development of own assignment/paper approximately 50 hours during training period.
Form/site: experience has taught us that the formation and cohesion in a learning group benefit from face-to-face meetings, and that this benefits networking between the participants in the group. We therefore organise our teaching as much as possible in classrooms at VU Amsterdam, and of course as long as the measures of the RIVM and VU Amsterdam allow. If for some reason you cannot attend a lecture on location, you can follow the lecture live online via Zoom. If you wish to make use of this, you should inform us of this preferably no later than 1 week before the start of the course via VU.SOG@vu.nl.
Programme
Session 1: Building and maintaining trust: insight into how the dynamics of trust and mistrust work, especially in the public sector.
Session 2: Conditions for trust: what makes it possible to steer from trust or not? What is the relationship between control/accountability and trust? How does trust work differently between organisations than between people?
Meeting 3: Dialogical leadership: how do you create the conditions for a fruitful dialogue with colleagues and within your organisation?
Meeting 4: Good practices: case-by-case treatment of a number of good practices with a focus on the political-administrative dimension. What do we learn from these practices?
Meeting 5: Learning bureaucracy and trust: how does a bureaucratic organisation keep the citizen in focus; how does it act socially just? How can a bureaucratic organisation embed continuous learning in its organisational culture?
Meeting 6: Three special themes: 3 shorter lectures on Contracting and Procurement from Trust;, Working in Networks or Chains from Trust, and Change Management towards Steering from Trust.
Meeting 7: Closing session with presentation: participants present their reflections. Diploma presentation. Closing with drinks.
Your profile
You are a professional with an academic or HBO+ education or academic work and thinking level. Furthermore, you have at least five years of relevant work experience (e.g. within municipalities or at organisations that cooperate frequently with municipalities). You have a managerial role or the assignment to cooperate (internally or within a chain). You face the challenge of leading or organising more from the basis of trust and less from rules and control. You want to strengthen your own competences in this respect and be able to realise this way of working within your own organisation.
An intake interview may be part of the final enrolment.
Assignment: develop your own case study/ practical problem
During the programme, participants apply their knowledge and insights directly in their practice. As such, this training is directly useful for the organisation where the participant works and also has elements of a learning lab/learning workshop in it (academic action learning). Participants work on their own case between each meeting and report back on their experiences and findings at the end of each meeting; fellow participants provide feedback. Challenges encountered can be discussed. New insights are also translated into the assignment for the next month on the way to the next meeting. Your own case is already discussed during the intake.
Literature
The literature to be studied is multidisciplinary and is made available digitally. Literature is sent out (digitally) well in advance of each meeting in preparation for the topic under discussion at that meeting.
